Due to unavoidable circumstances beyond our control (namely severe and prolonged inclement weather), a few schedule changes regarding KAT's upcoming production of RENT have been implemented. We regret to announce that Opening Night will be delayed by one week. Thus, performances on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13 have been canceled.
Our OPENING NIGHT will now be February 19th, 2010. In order to provide you with the optimal show experience, we will be adding the following two performances to replace the canceled ones: one on Thursday, February 25th, at 8pm and a closing matinee Sunday, March 7th, at 2pm.
New performance dates: February 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28, March 4, 5, 6, 7. Times: Th/Fr/Sa @ 8pm, Su @ 7pm (except 3/7 @ 2pm).
Thank you once again for your ongoing support of Kensington Arts Theatre and for your patience and flexibility regarding these schedule variations. Remember: NO DAY BUT TODAY. Don't miss KAT's RENT, opening February 19th, 2010!
RENT is a rock opera with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson based on Giacomo Puccini's opera, La Bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of AIDS.
The musical was first seen in a limited three-week workshop run at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1994. This same New York City off-Broadway theatre was also the musical's initial home following its official January 25, 1996, opening. Tragically, the show's creator (Larson) died suddenly the night before the off-Broadway premiere. The show won a Pulitzer Prize, and the production was a hit. The musical moved to Broadway's larger Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996.
RENT marks KAT's second Jonathan Larson production, after having put on tick, tick...BOOM! in May 2004, with WATCH nominations received by Will Hayden for Leading Actor in a Musical and Craig Pettinati for Direction of a Musical.
We at KAT would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to the casts, staffs, and crew of our 2009 shows: One Red Flower, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, and The Rocky Horror Show. Please join us at the WATCH presentation ceremony held on Sunday, March 14 (7pm), at The Birchmere in Alexandria, VA.

That sweet transvestite and his motley
crew did the time warp on Broadway in a
twenty fifth-anniversary revival. Complete
with sass from the audience, cascading
toilet paper and an array of other audience
participation props, this deliberately
kitschy rock & roll sci-fi gothic is more fun
than ever.
