Kensington, MD, April 22 – Kensington Arts Theatre is proud to announce that we have obtained the rights from Music Theatre International (MTI) to perform RENT in 2010. It will be directed by Craig Pettinati.
RENT is a rock opera with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson based on Giacomo Puccini's opera, La Bohème. It tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York's Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of AIDS.
The musical was first seen in a limited three-week workshop run at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1994. This same New York City off-Broadway theatre was also the musical's initial home following its official January 25, 1996, opening. Tragically, the show's creator (Larson) died suddenly the night before the off-Broadway premiere. The show won a Pulitzer Prize, and the production was a hit. The musical moved to Broadway's larger Nederlander Theatre on April 29, 1996.
RENT marks KAT's second Jonathan Larson production, after having put on tick, tick...BOOM! in May 2004, with WATCH nominations received by Will Hayden for Leading Actor in a Musical and Craig Pettinati for Direction of a Musical.
Kensington Arts Theatre is proud to announce our 2009-2010 season!

*PENDING AVAILABILITY* The Rocky Horror Show (Fall 2009)
Book/Music/Lyrics by Richard O'Brien
Directed by Darnell Morris
Produced by Doe B. Kim
That sweet transvestite and his motley
crew did the time warp on Broadway in a
twenty fifth-anniversary revival. Complete
with sass from the audience, cascading
toilet paper and an array of other audience
participation props, this deliberately
kitschy rock & roll sci-fi gothic is more fun
than ever.
